Acclaimed Nigerian Poet Appointed UN Global Advocate for Peace
(MENAFN) Maryam Bukar Hassan, an acclaimed Nigerian poet, has been appointed the United Nations' Global Advocate for Peace, as confirmed in a statement released on Friday by the Office of the UN Secretary-General's Spokesperson.
A passionate advocate for peace, gender equality, and youth empowerment, Hassan leverages the art of spoken word to promote inclusive peacebuilding across the globe. Her poetry serves as a powerful tool to highlight critical social issues, according to the official statement.
Hassan's impactful work has been showcased on globally recognized platforms such as the UN SDG Awards, TED Talks, and the World Bank Youth Summit. She has also partnered with the UN on several initiatives, including creating the "Peace Begins With Me" poetry video for the International Day of Peace. Additionally, she performed a spoken word piece at last year’s Summit of the Future.
Her unwavering commitment to social change has earned her prestigious accolades, including the Sustainable Africa Award at COP28. She is also a finalist for the 2024 UN SDG Creativity Award.
Jean-Pierre Lacroix, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, emphasized the importance of Hassan’s new role, stating that "the dedication of the Global Advocate's time and energy to this effort will greatly increase awareness of the peace and security priorities of the United Nations, particularly the vital role of women and youth in advancing inclusive and sustainable peace."
