HOMES WITH SOLAR BATTERIES ARE PROTECTED FROM OUTAGES AND MAXIMIZE THEIR SAVINGS, SAYS LONG ISLAND SOLAR INSTALLER

Solar panels create incredible savings on their own, but it gets better when there’s a battery in the system.”

RONKONKOMA, NY, UNITED STATES, September 11, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Power Solutions, one of Long Island’s longest-operating and top-rated solar contractors, is urging homeowners to consider battery energy storage as a value-driven upgrade for their solar-only systems in 2026. A solar battery is a drop-in upgrade that can increase what a solar household saves each year.

SOLAR-ONLY SYSTEMS LEAVE SAVINGS ON THE TABLE

A solar panel array without storage creates value only when the sun is shining and the utility’s crediting structures favor the homeowner. When the sun sets, or if the home’s exported power is credited at a lower rate, solar panels generate less savings.

Power Solutions says that this gap is becoming more of a concern for families on Long Island. Utility rate structures have shifted to time-of-use pricing, where electricity in the early evening, coinciding with solar production drop-off, costs more than electricity used at midday.

• Without a Solar Battery: Excess solar production in the day is exported to the grid and credited to the account at the utility’s compensation rate. Any electricity the home draws when solar panels shut down is purchased at the retail rate.
• With a Solar Battery: Excess solar production in the day charges a battery system first. The battery can power the home at peak times when solar panels shut down, further reducing how much electricity the home takes from the grid.

“We have installed over 7,500 solar panel systems over the years, and many of these were solar-only for homeowners who weren’t ready to add a battery at the time,” said Power Solutions owner Joe Milillo. “Solar panels create incredible savings on their own, but it gets better when there’s a battery in the system. It’s what turns solar from something that offsets the bill into something that’s more comparable to a private grid, with better savings and backup that keeps lights on during outages.”

SOLAR BATTERIES PROVIDE BACKUP POWER IN EMERGENCIES

Long Island’s exposure to hurricanes, nor’easters, and summer thunderstorms means grid outages are a regular concern for homeowners, especially in Suffolk County. PSGE Long Island customers have experienced multi-day outages after major storms in past years. Power Solutions notes that solar panels shut down with the grid during outages to protect lines. With a battery in the system, it goes into island mode. The home is isolated from the grid with the lights and outlets still working.

HOW THE UPGRADE WORKS FOR EXISTING SOLAR CUSTOMERS

Power Solutions says that adding battery energy storage to existing solar is more straightforward than a full installation. The necessary infrastructure is usually already in place.

• Power Solutions reviews a household’s daily energy consumption and recent bills to recommend a solar battery suited to peak time or overnight energy needs.
• Homeowners can choose their backup priorities. A battery system can power a whole home or just a few outlets, essential appliances, and lighting.
• Households may qualify for dynamic load management incentives if they allow the utility to tap into battery storage when the grid needs it.
• Incentives are discussed on a case-by-case basis in a free detailed consultation.

Power Solutions reminds homeowners that while solar panels don’t need batteries to generate savings, a free consultation and cost/benefit analysis will reveal how much better those savings could get with an upgrade.
